Inter-Tribal Working Group on VAWA Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction

Event Description: This will be the 7th in-person meeting of the Inter-Tribal Working Group (ITWG) on VAWA Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction (SDVCJ) which focuses on implementation of the enhanced tribal criminal jurisdiction provisions of VAWA 2013. Convening of Tribes Working on a Title IV-E Plan Dates: Monday December 5th and Tuesday December 6th Location: Renaissance Hotel - Mojave Learning Center

Event Description: The purpose of this event is to convene tribes working on a Title IV-E plan to access federal funding for a tribe to operate a foster care, adoption assistance and guardianship assistance program. Technical assistance of federal requirements will be provided and peer-to-peer sharing/learning will be encouraged. Tribes will also be provided information on how to access programmatic technical assistance from the Capacity Building Center for Tribes.

Office on Violence Against Women Annual Tribal Consultation

Date: Tuesday December 6th (all day)

Event Description: The 11th Annual Tribal Consultation for the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) has been scheduled for Tuesday, December 6, 2016, on the reservation of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in Palm Springs, California. The consultation will take place prior to the 15th National Indian Nations Conference: Justice for Victims of Crime, which is scheduled for December 8th 10th in the same location at the Renaissance Palm Springs. The Department of Justice will be joined by colleagues from the United States Department of Health and Human Services and Department of the Interior. The purpose of the violence against women government-to-government consultation is to solicit recommendations from tribal government leaders on the following three topics:

Enhancing the safety of American Indian and Alaska Native women from domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and sex trafficking;
Strengthening the Federal response to the crimes of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking and sex trafficking; and
Administering grant funds appropriated for tribal governments and programs created to benefit tribal governments by the original Violence Against Women Act and subsequent legislation.

Stakeholder Meeting - Vision 21: Tribal Victim Services Resource Mapping Tool

Date: Tuesday December 6th (3:00 – 6:00 pm)

Location: Renaissance Hotel - Chino A/B

Event Description: During this meeting, the National Center for Victims of Crime and its partners will deliver an overview of the project, and share important updates from the first year, which include the findings from five (5) focus groups in Alaska Native and urban Indian communities. There will also be discussions on the types of services to be included in the tool, as well as the data to be collected from each resource listed. This meeting will require a high-level of involvement from participants in order to create a comprehensive tribal victim services resource mapping tool. Participants will be asked to share input on the web layout of the tool. Following the meeting, participants are instructed to gather information relevant to this project as they attend the remainder of the Indian Nations Conference.

Sponsoring Agency: The Office for Victims of Crime of the U.S. Department of Justice has funded the National Center for Victims of Crime, the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), and the Tribal Law and Policy Institute (TLPI) to create a web-based resource mapping tool that would: (1) Link AI/AN survivors of crime and abuse to services anywhere in the country, and; (2) Help identify gaps in the network of existing services.

Intended Audience: This event includes project stakeholders, but it is also open to other organizations representing tribal victim services and individuals that work with American Indian and Alaska Native victims/survivors of crime.

Walking with Youth: Trauma Informed, Culturally Based Justice & Healing

Dates: Tuesday December 6th and Wednesday December 7th (all day both days) with Evening Cultural Sharing from 7:00 - 9:00 pm on Monday December 5th

Location: Hilton Palm Springs Hotel

Event Description: This gathering brings together programs for Tribal youth that are funded through the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, to build community by sharing successes and challenges in creating, expanding and sustaining innovative, developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant approaches for supporting tribal youth. Programs will learn from their peers and from leaders in the fields of youth development, juvenile justice, trauma-informed care and culturally based tribally specific teachings and practices.

Sponsoring Agency: This is an Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) funded technical assistance event organized by the OJJDP Tribal Youth Program (TYP) Training and Technical Assistance Center.

Intended Audience: This is a closed event for OJJDP’s Tribal Youth Programs and Healing to Wellness Court grantees nationally, including Alaska.

Office for Victims of Crime Listening Session and Open Discussion concerning Tribal Victim Service Needs for the AI/AN Community

Event Description: The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) welcomes the tribal community to participate in a guided, open discussion regarding victim services needs in their community. During this session, OVC will seek input on the following questions:

1) What are the barriers and obstacles your communities face incorporating tribal victim services into your justice system?

2) Are there resources missing for victims who need services for on-going long-term recovery? Tell us about that.

3) Are there underserved populations/un-responded to victims in your community and what types of assistance and services do they need?

4) What type of technical assistance/training resources are needed to establish/maintain victim services programming?

Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation (CTAS) Orientation

Event Description: The Department of Justice Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation (CTAS) Committee will be conducting the FY 2016 CTAS Orientation workshop on December 7, 2016. The CTAS Orientation workshop is designed to provide CTAS grant recipients with the tools and guidance necessary to implement and operate programs funded under the FY 2016 CTAS initiative. Participants will: 1) learn grant management strategies to ensure the successful implementation of their CTAS projects; 2) explore the fundamentals of financial management including common mistakes grant recipients make when managing grants; and 3) engage in discussions on topics including risk mitigation; keys to preventing and detecting fraud; and conflicts of interest.
