Good Afternoon,

The BJA Drug Court Technical Assistance Project at American University is presenting the second webinar in a three-part interactive webinar series that addresses the critical role of defense counsel in drug court programs as well as in representing drug-involved offenders both within and outside of the drug court context.
The Role of Defense Counsel in Drug Courts: How to Provide Effective Representation from Initial Contact Through Program Completion will take place on Tuesday April 5, 2016 from 2:30 to 4:00 PM EST. The session will take attendees through each stage of the drug court and discuss how defense counsel are involved at each stage while also addressing the dual roles defense counsel play in drug courts, representing their individual clients and their role as a member of the team. Topics presented will include protecting clients’ constitutional rights, attorney/client relationships, advice and advocacy, and navigating ethical concerns and potentially competing interests.

The session will be divided into a 60-minute presentation with 30 minutes for follow-up questions and comments. Case studies will be presented to help illustrate concepts discussed and help guide questions. The presentation will be led by Yvonne Smith Segars, Esq. and Mike Loeffler, Esq.

Session 2: Tuesday, April 5, 2016 from 2:30 - 4:00 pm EDT
