Treatment of Pregnant and Parenting Women: The Use of Medication Assisted Treatment<http://capwiz.com/nadcp/utr/1/NKIQTTGTZF/BQJITTHSLD/10285127026>

Every day in the United States, 24 babies are diagnosed and treated for withdrawal from prenatal-exposure opioids and 18 women die as a result of a prescription painkiller overdose. These numbers, which represent marked increases from 10 years ago, relate closely to increase prescribing of opioid medications during the past decade. As the rates of opioid misuse increase in the general population, the rates of misuse also increase in the pregnant population bringing with it the intersection of drug addiction treatment and the judicial system. Helping individuals stop their opioid misuse and recover from addiction is a challenge and supporting women who are pregnant represents especially perplexing challenges. This webinar will summarize contextual and co-morbid factors observed among many women with substance use disorders, with a focus on opioid use disorders. It will compare and contrast the benefits and risks of providing methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone or medication assisted-withdrawal during pregnancy for the mother, fetus and neonate. Finally, it will identify characteristics of a competent medication assisted treatment program for women in order to help the judicial system audience determine what treatment modality and program women and their children may most likely benefit from.
